Steamcrust field notes: lore of the rusted shores

Steampunk crustaceans with industrial union representation, a Kraken with opinions, and the rift that started the whole war — the story behind Act I's blasted coastline.

Before the zombie shark, before the TPS reports, there was Steamcrust — the first dimension HEROCORP opened, and the reason the company exists at all. Filed for commanders who like knowing what they're blowing up.

The first rift

HEROCORP's rift technology was invented for profit, not defense — the science division's pitch was literally 'lucrative opportunities for war in other universes'. Steamcrust answered first: a coastline dimension of rusted industry, tidal machinery and crustaceans who had industrialized so hard they'd weaponized their own docks. The company's 'preemptive defense' framing has always been legally convenient; the shareholders didn't ask questions while the contracts were good.

Mechanical crustacean war machines

The crustacean industrial complex

Steamcrust's defenders aren't mindless — they're organized. The Gearworks is their industrial heart, Shellgate their armory, the Cannery their proving ground. Every mission name on the Act I board is a piece of their infrastructure. The steampunk machinery littering the battlefields isn't set dressing: it's the evidence that this dimension mechanized warfare before Earth figured out the rift existed. Fight them at the Boiler Deck and you're fighting on their factory floor.

Field note

The Brass Overkill weapon wrap in the Arsenal Vault is Steamcrust-issue plating — the same finish the crustaceans bolt onto their own war machines. Wearing it is technically a war trophy.

The Kraken question

Field reports disagree on whether the Kraken is Steamcrust's weapon or its landlord. The official HEROCORP line calls it 'indigenous megafauna'; veterans who watched it surface through reinforced pier armor suspect it's more like management. Either way, the relationship is symbiotic — the crustaceans build around it, the Kraken surfaces where defense matters most, and commanders who crack Kraken's Maw find the act's finale suspiciously quiet afterward. Coincidence is a filing error.

Steamcrust didn't start the war. It industrialized first, and HEROCORP called the invoice a preemptive defense.

Key takeaways

Short on time? This is the manual condensed to a sticky note for your monitor.

  • Steamcrust was the first dimension contacted — the war's patient zero
  • The crustaceans industrialized warfare before Earth found the rift
  • Act I missions map directly onto their industrial infrastructure
  • The Kraken's relationship to the locals is deliberately ambiguous
  • The Brass Overkill wrap is literal war-trophy plating

Asked after this manual

The questions commanders send the desk after reading this guide.

Steampunk crustaceans, yes — mechanical tides, gear-driven war machines and dockyard lanes. The devs described it as 'steampunk/crustaceans' and it's exactly that committed.

Because it is one — the dimension is tidal industrial shoreline. Water lanes, piers and breakwalls shape the mission geometry throughout Act I.

In endless mode's Kraken Depths, yes — on a timer. And in Boss Rush seasons with modifier stacks, occasionally with friends.
// Apply the Doctrine

Own the shoreline aesthetic

The Arsenal Vault's Brass Overkill wrap is Steamcrust-issue plating — wear the dimension you conquered.
